Bloom & Shadow | Words by Candlelight
April’s Words by Candlelight at Department in Ryde drifts between light and dark, where new life unfurls beneath the memory of winter. Our poets and storytellers gather among the candles to share words that bloom in the quiet spaces between joy and sorrow, hope and loss. Expect whispers of renewal, wild beauty, and the tender shadows that follow every spring sunrise. Settle into the glow, breathe in the promise of the season, and let the evening unfold like petals in the dark.

Join us in Manchester for a festival that celebrates all stories, all voices, and all genres.
Wild Tongues: The Stories We Carry
What happens when we tell the stories we were taught to hide? Join debut author Heidi Hinda Chadwick for an intimate evening of conversation and reading exploring desire, shame, myth and transformation. In discussion with Berrin Golding, she’ll delve into the power of the stories we inherit ~ the ones passed between women, the ones that live in the body, the ones that shape who we become. She’ll then read from her Manchester-set adult, twisted, lyrical folktale of three women bound by longing, nature and the quiet pull of metamorphosis. Expect warmth, honesty, and space to reflect, connect and linger.
At Mockingbirds, 481-483 Wilmslow Rd, Withington, Manchester M20 4A
£5 ticket (redeemable against book purchase on the night). Limited to 20 places. To reserve a place, please DM @heidihinda or email heidihindachadwick@gmail.com. Your ticket is confirmed once payment is received.

FOLKLORE & BEASTS | WORDS BY CANDLELIGHT
Return to Department in Ryde for the second gathering in our Words by Candlelight series, where stories and poems are shared beneath a sea of candlelight. This month’s theme, Folklore and Beasts, explores the wild edges of old tales and the creatures that haunt them. From shapeshifters and sea spirits to myths half-remembered in the dark, our poets and storytellers will bring the legends of the past roaring back to life. Settle in, sip something warm, and listen closely. The candles may flicker, and something ancient is stirring. Tickets available here.
